On the eve of the first anniversary of the #MeToo movement, award-winning novelist, poet and translator Idra Novey presents a novel that explores the consequences of abuse and the public exposure of abuse in the deep and truthful way only fiction can. The author of the acclaimedWays to Disappear  brings her readers to an unnamed island nation ten years after the downfall of a brutal regime where 30-year-old college instructor, Lena, begins to suspect the powerful politician she helped put in office is taking advantage of a young woman who's been introducing him at rallies. When this same woman turns up dead, Lena is forced to reexamine her own complex past.

Those Who Knew conjures a modern-day fable that shows how public politics and private violence can controvert each other. The story sheds light on the forces—both personal and structural—that conspire in confounding ways to let abuse against women flourish in homes, businesses, and governments. In this powerful novel, Novey explores our human capability for hypocrisy and monstrous acts, but also for hope and resilience.

Novey will be joined in conversation by Hernán Diaz, author of In the Distance, a finalist for the 2018 PEN/Faulkner Award and the Pulitzer Prize.
